How to Plan Matching Family Christmas Shirts (Sizes, Colors, Photo Tips) – Buying Guide

Matching family Christmas shirts go wrong in predictable ways. The sizes arrive and one child's shirt does not match the others. The colours look fine on screen and clash in the photograph. Everyone is dressed identically, and the picture reads as a uniform rather than a family.

All three problems are solvable before you order. Here is the order we would work in.

Start with the design, not the colour

Pick one design and hold it. The design is what makes a group look related; the colour is what keeps them from looking cloned. Every piece on the matching family Christian shirts page is the same print at the same quality in youth and adult bodies, which is the part most shops get wrong — the children's version is often a cheaper screen on a thinner shirt, and it shows in a photograph.

Use a palette, not a uniform

Three colours will dress four to six people comfortably: black, white and ivory. Give the adults the darker tones and the children the lighter ones, or alternate. Everyone is in the same design, so the eye reads family first and clothing second.

One practical note: white and ivory photograph differently under a Christmas tree with warm bulbs. Put at least one dark shirt in the frame or the group can wash out.

Measure a shirt they already wear

Age is a terrible guide to size. Lay a shirt the child already wears flat, measure across the chest an inch below the armhole, and compare it to the chest width on the size chart for the design you are buying. Do the same for the adults. This takes ten minutes and removes almost all of the return risk.

Youth sizes run up through a teen fit and adult sizes start at XS, so most families overlap in the middle. If a child sits right on the boundary, size up: a slightly loose shirt photographs better than a tight one, and they will grow into it.

Plan the photograph before the shirts arrive

Decide where you are taking the picture and what everyone will be standing in front of. A neutral wall, a doorway, a tree, a snowy field: all fine, but you want the shirts to contrast with the background rather than match it. Black and ivory both read well against a green tree. All-ivory against a pale wall does not.

Shoot before the meal, not after. Everyone is still in the shirt properly, hair is done, and nobody has gravy on a sleeve. Natural light from a window or an open door beats a flash every time.

Order early enough to fix a mistake

Printing takes two to five business days before shipping, and shipping is free within the United States. Order by December 10 for standard delivery before Christmas, and keep one spare business day for the case where a size needs swapping.

If you would rather not build the set piece by piece, the Family Matching Set collects the four-piece look and takes 10% off automatically from four apparel pieces in one cart. Either way, start from the Christian t-shirts if you want to see the designs as garments first.
